According to Objectification Theory (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997), sexual objectification leads many girls and women to internalize a view of themselves as sexual objects or to self-objectify. Self-objectification (manifested as habitual body monitoring) can lead to the anticipation of appearance evaluation by others (i.e., appearance anxiety) and vigilance for personal safety (i.e., safety anxiety) (for reviews see Calogero, 2012; Calogero, Tantleff-Dunn, & Thompson, 2011; Moradi & Huang, 2008; Calogero et al., under review; Calogero, Tylka, Siegel, & Pina, under review). In the present research, we first examine compliance with COVID-19 safety precautions using an Objectification Theory framework. We suspect that the greater extent to which a person experiences sexual objectification, self-objectification will be higher, and more appearance and safety anxiety will be reported. The chronic hypervigilance that accompanies appearance and safety anxiety restricts voluntary movements (see Fairchild & Rudman, 2008). Consequently, the anxieties stemming from self-objectification may lead to greater compliance with COVID-19 safety recommendations. In other words, complying with COVID-19 safety recommendations (e.g., avoiding public transportation, practicing physical distancing) should be easier and occur more frequently for those who are chronically conditioned to be cautious about their physical safety and movements. Second, we will examine gender differences in the model’s variables. Men are less likely than women to experience sexual objectification and self-objectification (Choma et al., 2010), but to the extent that they do, similar processes unfold (e.g., see Choma et al., 2010; Oehlhof et al., 2009). We add to the present literature by providing mean-level differences in the present variables, predicting that men (vs. women) will overall report less sexual objectification incidents and lower self-objectification, appearance and safety anxiety, and compliance with COVID-19 recommendations.
